What is the Korean 10 step skincare routine?
The concept of the 10 step skincare routine is that taking the proper steps to prepping the skin and layering products with essential key ingredients will allow those ingredients to sink deeper into our skin maxmizing the benefits of those products and allowing our skin to look more youthful and brighter. Now this concept is not anything new but with the demands of a busy lifestyle it's hard to think of taking the time out to layer all these products but if you know which products go where it actually only takes less than 5 min to really invest into your skin. For my brides to be, it is so essential to properly care for your skin during the days leading up to the wedding day so your skin will be a perfect canvas. For a point of reference my skin is Normal/Combination/Sensitive with issues of dehydration. I will go into a in depth review of products in each step that would be great for different skin types in a future post.
Step 1: Cleansing Oil/Balm (In shower less than 1 minute)
One of the most important steps to starting your night time routine. It is so important to properly remove all the dirt, grim and makeup from the whole day. Whether you use a cleansing oil or a balm this step reallys helps to lift off all that hard to remove grim from your skin. It is so important to make sure to emulsify the product in your hands first and then massage it into your skin. One of my favorite cleansing balms has been the Purity Clean it Zero from Banila Co. It does such an amazing job of removing my makeup without stripping the skin and has not broken me out!
Step 2: Foaming/Gel Cleanser (In Shower less than 1 minute)
Heard of Double cleanse? This is the second step to the most effective way to clean your skin at night. If you asked me a year ago what I thought about cleansing oils and balms I would have told you how much I hated it. I was not keen on the idea of replacing my cleanser with an oil cleanser. It always left me feeling a little gritty and eventually would clog my pores, now I see the importance and effectiveness after adding my favorite foaming cleanser AFTER. This step helps to further remove any oily feeling after step 1. My favorite is the Cerave Foaming Facial cleanser. So effective at getting the skin clean without stripping the skin too much.
Step 3: Exfoliation (3'xs a week in the shower, less than 1 minute)
This step shouldn't be done every day as it can cause irritation to the skin but I find this step to be so essential every other day to really help slough off any dead skin cells. I love the Tatcha rice enzyme powder as it really helps to slough of the dead cells and leaves my skin feeling so silky soft but not irritated at all. I would definitely stay away from any harsh physical scrubs that have large grains or beads.
Step 4: Toner
This step is important to normalize the pH of the skin after washing and prep the skin to allow the rest of the products to follow to really seep into the skin. My ultimate all time fave is an acid toner is the P50 lotion from Biologique Recherche.
Step 5: Essense
People often get confused between toners and essences but and essence is basically a cross between a toner and a serum. This is one of the most favorite steps to korean skincare as most essences are chock full of fermented ingredients that are great for brightening and hydrating the skin. The Whamisa organic flowers essence has been amazing during this cold winter. Make sure when applying essences to use your hands to pat onto the face.
Step 6: Treatment
This is the step that you will add any treatment lotions or creams to address your specific concerns. My main concerns are hyperpigmentation and antiaging. A staple for me is a prescription retional, Retin A micro.
Step 7: Serums/Oils
Serums and oils are usually also products that are more saturated and with a higher percentage of active ingredients. They are amazing with no only helping to address skin care concerns but also helping to really hydrate the skin. My two faves lately have been the Klairs Freshly juiced serum and the Aromatica 100% Argan oil.
Step 8: Eye cream
In the picture below I have not added a eye cream as I am still looking for one that I really love. Mostly I use my treatments and oils onto the eye area but currently I am trying out the Mizon Snail eye cream so will update on how I like it after using it some more.
Step 9: Moisturizer
This is the step that will help to really moisturize and seal in all the products that have been layered onto the skin. The Benton Snail steam cream has been so effective at really keeping me hydrated during the dry, heated induced winter nights.
Step 10: Lip care
We often forget to put lip balm onto our lips before bed but I find this to be an important step during the winter as well. At night when the heat is on it can really leave our skin parched and dry and lips are no exception. I have been using this Laneige lip sleeping mask but I haven't really fallen in love with it. It does a great job and smells amazing but the Rosebud salve is still one of my faves.

First what are BB Cushions?
BB Cushions are essentially just BB creams soaked in a sponge like cushion that is placed inside a portable compact. All cushions come with a special air puff that you use to apply the cushion to your face. This makes applying and carrying around BB Cushions a breeze.
How do you apply?
When applying any type of cushions it's very important to use a patting motion, think pushing the product into your face. Because BB Cushions are infused with skincare ingredients most creams tend to be very creamy and if applied in a tradtional sliding motion it will leave streaks on the face.
Are BB Cushions for all skin types?
There are many type of BB Cushions catered to all skin types now and luckily as the trend has become popular all over the world more companies are now coming out with a wider range of shades. There are also cushions that are "Matte" for oilier skin and "Moisturizing" for dry skin types and also cushions that fall in between the matte and moisturizing for skin types that are not quite dry or oily...ME. My skin is quite complicated. I have your typical combination skin (oily in the center and dry on the sides) but during the harsh winter months I also deal with severe dehydration which causes my skin to flake and shed, not pretty at all.
HERA UV Mist Cushion!
Now as a makeup artist it is a part of my job to try new makeup trends and products (wonderous I know =)). For my brides, I try to steer clear of any type of BB creams as they all contain spf and spf at high levels, which is not the best for bridal makeup due to the flashback the sunscreen components can cause. But my clients do ask about what they can use on a daily basis and as a person who doesn't like to wear heavy makeup myself BB creams are amazing. Skincare, SPF and Cover in one product sounds like a dream. And to hear that it now came in a easy to carry and use cushion form sounded like a dream. So I tried a number of them and I had yet to find any that I had fallen in love with that I could recommend to my clients. My main issue was that most of them felt like an oil slick by midday and the more matte versions clung to my dry patches and looked too patchy and cakey by midday.
But I am so happy to say I have found my dream cushion! I have been using the HERA UV Mist Cushion for the past month and I am in love. It gives me the most beautiful coverage without it looking cakey and literally stays put all day without it feeling sticky or oily. It moisturizes just enough to not accentuate the dry patches and gives me the most beautiful glow from within that I LOVE. Another bonus is that it feels super cooling as you apply. It is also one of the few Korean cushions that have a color beyond the usual darkest No.23. The shade I have is the Nude (means natural) No.25 Amber which is a perfect shade for my skin tone. There is also a Cover version of this same cushion and is supposed to provide a higher coverage. For me the Nude version is just right.
Just a little info about the cushion from the HERA website.

Where can I buy?
HERA is a brand of AMORE PACIFIC, so if there is a AMORE store around you they should carry the HERA brand of products along with Laneige and Sulwhasoo. This retails for $45 and comes with 1 refill. Online you can find it from ibuybeauti.com, stylekorean.com, peachandlily.com. I bought mine from ibuybeauti.com and only had positive experiences with my orders from them.
Below is a Before and After of me wearing the cushion. As you can see the coverage is so natural and glowy.

These past few weeks have made all of us Northeast residents feel like we are in a giant Snowglobe and Elsa is shaking the globe while laughing and playing a cruel joke on us all. I, like everyone else can not wait for the spring weather to finally be here and leave behind this winter mess. The winter can have some of us feeling a bit down but it can also wreak havoc on our skins. The combination of cold winds and dry indoor heat can make even the softest skin feel quite parched. As peak wedding season is coming upon us, I get asked ALOT by my brides how to best prep their skin for their upcoming nuptials. My number one recommendation is to find a great skin care therapist and get on a facial program. This is best if you have a few months before the actual wedding date as you want to make sure how your skin will react after getting a thorough cleansing facial. But below are some products that are my number one go to products to combat those winter skin woes for your upcoming nuptials.
Soap free cleansers are always the way to go but during the winter months a great cleansing oil is the best way to thoroughly remove any dirt and makeup without irritating your face. If your skin leans more towards the oilier side I would recommend cleansing with a soap free foaming cleanser such as my favorite Cerave Foaming Cleanser.
By far the BEST acid toner I have ever tried. An acid toner is a great way to slough off the dull, dry skin patches and even out skin tone. Just make sure not to overdue it as the skin can react negatively. I would suggest starting off with using an acid toner once a day at night.
3. La Roche Posay Effaclar duo (Made in US) $36.95
If you suffer from minor breakouts this gel is the perfect combo of lactic acid and benzoyl peroxide. There are 2 versions one made in France and the other in the US, personally I have found the one made in the US to be more effective for keeping my occasional acne at bay. The difference is the US version contains Benzoyl peroxide and the one made in France does not.
This gel cream does a seriously amazing job of keeping my parched skin feel moist without feeling oily. I apply this 4 times a week during my night time routine.
This scrub is another winner! The sugar scrubs do not feel harsh on the skin and the honey leaves skin feeling so soft!
A moisture spray that you can carry around with you in your bag and spray on your face to keep you feeling fresh and moisturized throughout the day
This is another one of those staples in my kit, keeps the lips feeling so soft but if your like me and have hands that look like its been through some tough times because of all the handwashing, this is a lifesaver for those chapped knuckles!
